-Our first leg of the league tournament was well attended with 22 players vying for league points in a no- limit format. The winners from 1st to 4th were Cary Moon, Harold Davis, Tommy Squires and Rob Leader. Our next tournament will be February 5th and will be a LIMIT game. Should be interesting.
Saturday night (29th) will be strictly a cash game. It will have a changing format as the night goes on. See details on the home page. Big news in the DFW poker world this week is the City of Dallas changing their mind about the legality of the poker rooms they permitted for the last few years. This includes the most successful room in the DFW area the Texas Card House. It is so successful that at any point of time during the day they have more games in play than the Winstar and Choctaw rooms do combined. Evidently the poker rooms in Dallas who all received a permit(called a Certificate of Occupancy) from the City have now had them revoked citing a clerical error by the City. This despite the fact that the Texas Card room met with all City departments to make sure their format was legal and receiving approval almost two years ago. This included a blessing from the City Attorney. The change in heart began a few months back when another poker room applied for a permit from the city in an old shut down steak house near the entrance of a subdivision of homes. Residents of the subdivision came out to the city to demand that they not allow a late-night poker room near their homes. In the argument before the appeals board, the City Attorney argued that the game rooms were illegal. In his opinion the Building Official had the power to deny the permit based upon it being "gambling room." The board denied the appeal and Champions was out of luck. Champions is suing the city saying the City has permitted other rooms so they can't discriminate against Champions. I suspect the City Attorney changed his mind about poker rooms when the neighbors turned out and now he has to cover his tracks. Basicly stating they made a mistake in permitting them It will harder to defend their denial of Champions if they allowed the other poker rooms to operate. At least now they are taking on a large poker room that has some money. Maybe a court will decide once and for all whether or not the law allows a "legal poker room" as a commercial venture. The rooms will most likely remain open while working through the court.

We had quite a turn-out for out cash game on Saturday night January 8. Between 15-18 players filtered through two tables of competitive poker play. We had a couple of new young college-age players participate and, it looked like at least one of them did well( sorry I didn't get a name.)
While the cash games were very competitive, it is still a great place for HOA members to get together and have a good time and to just get to know each other. There is a lot of trash talking but, it is always good natured and lends itself to a fun atmosphere. I think we had two tables of at least 7 players at each table all the way to midnight. Our club provides a little differrent experience as many of our players have been playing together for years. It has a level of comraderie that you can't get in a commercial poker establishment(including the Oklahoma casinos.) Last Saturday night's game is proof of that as our attendance was higher than most of the commercial establishments in the metroplex. . Even if you have never attended one of our games, I think you will find it inviting. We try to go out of our way to make you feel comfortable even though you are attending a club that has been in existence for many years. We want you to become a regular. I would suggest you start by entering into one of our tournaments. You can't lose much money and you begin to learn about the people in club (and how they play!) We have had new players do very well in some of our tournaments and win a bit of money. It is the cheapest way to get into the LIVE poker playing universe. But, be beware, some of these guys have been playing for years and are pretty good. Some of the guys have been playing for years and are still not any good, so don't sweat it. (no names listed) There are many options for live poker play today, but our poker club is a unique expererience that I think you will enjoy. |
